When the sparkling sea first came into view through the bus window, Isosaki felt a twinge of awe. But stepping onto the scorching asphalt under the blazing sun quickly replaced that awe with a creeping unease. The group of thirty split into smaller teams of four or five, each heading to their assigned cottages.
