Wow wtf I had no idea she had written so many works…. I’m shocked. She’s been writing since the 90’s? Disgusting guy in 1998… she’s been writing these flawed and complicated characters since the beginning. Do you think her work is literature? I feel like her stuff is just tropey genre fiction. I have only read the stuff you have translated by her, and utsukushii koto/in the box on another site before you came along. And I consider utsukushii koto her best work personally from what I’ve read so far, so I thought it was new. I’m surprised deep breath wasn’t as old as I thought it was. But seems like the novels I really loved, utsukushii koto, in the box, ashen moon are like in the middle. I saw the cover of her newest work with the vampires but it doesn’t look like the angsty unrequited love straight/gay bl that I usually like from her. I wish there was an interview of her or something. Thanks for posting this! I feel like she feels less mysterious now lol. Since you’ve been reading her novels, have you noticed any transitions with her taste or writing when comparing her very first work/works verses her stuff through the years and the stuff now?
ReplyDeleteHer work is NOT tropey genre fiction*
DeleteI meant smiling at the moon, not ashen moon 😭. I also think a the novels I mentioned above along with a disgusting guy and and expired first love, all these novels are really good for me personally. Ashen moon was actually recent! Which makes sense, she was probably ready to try some new things 💀. I really find her works about the pain of unrequited love therapeutic, and I wonder if she did too.
DeleteYes, I was also surprised that she's written so many novels. If I had to rank them, it would be a tie between Utsukushii Koto and In the Box. They both hit differently, and they were the first JP novels I read, so they're hard to forget. Yeah, I think her work is literature. Despite her main theme being flawed and complicated characters, and there’s often some sort of abuse that pushes the MC and ML together, I haven’t read one that feels like another. It’s not like those tropey novels where it’s the same story with different characters. I feel like Konohara really dares to go where other authors wouldn’t, like in Ashen Moon and the Cold series. I’m not great at picking up on style nuances, but one that really stood out was Ashen Moon. It looks like she was experimenting with it because it feels so different from her previous work.
DeleteI’m reading the vampire series, and to be honest, there’s very little romance. I’m planning on posting the series here because the ML is one of a kind, and that makes the story worth reading. There's plenty of angst and unrequited love, but I’m not really into the vampire theme lol. Overall, I’m on the same page as you—her works about the pain of unrequited love are therapeutic and I like the problematic characters.
Thanks for always spending the time to respond to me, I really enjoy hearing your thoughts. It’s really exciting talking to someone about a favorite author!
DeleteNo, thank you for always leaving a comment 💕 it always makes my day!
DeleteThanks so much for translating Konohara Narise's novels. I first discovered her work back in 2020, during the pandemic, and read Utsukushii Koto, Hako no Naka, and Love Times. After that, I tried to find more translations, but only came across Sleeping Bunny and the Cold series. I feel really lucky to have found this site, english isn’t my first language, but your translations are super easy to read and understand. Thanks again 🥰
ReplyDeleteAww, you’re so sweet! I also discovered Konohara’s work during the pandemic, and Hako no Naka was the second BL novel I read. I’m so glad we can enjoy more of her translated novels together ❤️
DeleteThanks for the reply, and i wanna ask you something. I was wondering, in Love Times there’s a small bit story about Arita’s younger sibling and his boyfriend. Is there a novel that tells their story?
DeleteYes there is, it's called LOOP, sadly there's no digital version for it, and both the hardcover and paperback editions are out of print.
DeleteI’m so glad they have their own story. hopefully it gets republished in digital vers soon so we can all enjoy it together
ReplyDeleteI’m so glad I can read these amazing works, thank you for your hard work!
ReplyDeleteWell, it’s definitely been a journey 😅. I originally planned to translate just 2–3 novels, but here we are with 18 novel titles (around 25 books, counting the different volumes) so far 😅. I think I need a little break from Konohara-sensei. I love her themes, but the last few novels have been so heavy. I’m thinking of exploring works by other authors for a change...
DeleteHiii jewel
ReplyDeleteThe manga of the novel expired first love has another side story of ml's pov in the last chapter of the manga in mangadex. Will you also translate it?
https://mangadex.org/chapter/fe4107b9-542c-48fc-8f45-332816985bf1/24
And also search if it has other side stories..
The ending was too sad. I am sobbing.
And thank you a lot for that novel.
Hi Stella, I’m glad you enjoyed the story, though I’m sorry it made you cry 😭 I looked it up, and unfortunately, there aren’t any other side stories—this is the final one. To be honest, scanlations aren’t really my forte. I found it pretty troublesome when I translated the manga pages that came with the Expired First Love novel, so I don’t think I’ll be doing it again, sorry... But I hope you enjoy the other novels on this blog! ❤️
